Phi Phi is quite easy to get to just catch a flight from Bangkok to Phuket. Air Asia offers very good deals to Phuket but there are other airlines that go there such as Nok Air and Bangkok Airways.

My boyfriend and I are considering going on a 17 days-long travel through the country (with a touroperator naturally, not by ourselves). Should we learn some basic Thai before we go, or will the people there know some English (enough to express themselves and understand what we're saying)?

just speak slowly some how they can manage to understand you, those who can't speak english will shy away when you approach them, don't worry just be natural and enjoy

oh my - well, depends on the meaning of reasonable - and combining the word "reasonable" with Pattaya, one of the wildest cities in the world - - well, ok - - You can get a very nice hotel room for 1500 baht - an ok guesthouse type room for 400 baht - after that - food can be had "reasonably" - and then it is party party party... you decide how over indulgent you want to be but you will have plenty to do it with - - but that is a funny mixed metaphor - reasonable and Pattaya.. sort of like a quiet time in a tornado... you are going on a roller coaster with no tracks - - relax and enjoy the ride!!!
