The Nam

The 1950s saw Pattaya as a small sleepy fishing village on one of those sleepy lazy Thai ports. Its beaches like many other Thai beaches stood beautifully palm fringed with squeaky golden sands but yet ignored, unused and alone; its sole purpose-to haul in fishing nets and boats. Indeed, Thais in those days were hardly interested in Beach hotel resorts and entertainments a luxury not yet discovered here. Koh Chang is an exotic island resort in Thailand which is obscured by its more famous counterparts, the island resorts of Phuket and Koh Samui.It is the third largest island in Thailand behind Phuket and Koh Samui respectively.

The 26 December tsunami was the worst natural disaster to ever strike Thailand, causing loss of life as well as major damage to property, the environment and the economy. As the world prepares to mark the fifth anniversary of the tsunami that killed 226,000 people, in 13 Asian and African countries, scars have yet to heal even after homes have been rebuilt, tourists have returned and foreign aid has ended.

In Thailand, 8,212 people were killed in the catastrophe or are still missing. The total included around 2,200 foreign tourists, almost all of whom were vacationing on or around the southern island of Phuket, a region that had contributed as much as 40 percent of Thailand's annual tourism income.

By the start of 2008, tourism had recovered so much local officials confidently predicted it would take just another year to return to pre-tsunami levels, breathing hope into an industry accounting for 6 percent of Thailand's economy.

But the global financial crisis and political uncertainty in Thailand intervened, pushing down tourist arrivals just as foreign aid for tsunami victims dried.

You are on vacation and you wander by a clothing shop and someone sitting out front says to you. "Good Evening sir, you want a nice suit?".

This happens often here in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit each year and are drawn by the culture, prices, delicious food and shopping bargains.

There are hundreds of custom clothing shops in this city. They look alike with a person of Indian descent sitting out front trying to entice visitors into the shop. Inside the shop are rolls of fabric from which to select material for dresses, shirts, overcoats, suits, slacks, and pants.

I wouldn't have know until I did some research and actually visited a number of these clothing shops. What I discovered is the following:

The suits that I saw which had been completed and ready to be picked up or sent abroad were similar to what I would have seen in Canada. The differences that I noticed are that you can have the suit made exactly the way you want, and to fit you perfectly.

If you are short you may want longer pants so you appear taller. If you are overweight you may want the suit longer and larger than normal.

Why buy off the rack a suit that does not fit perfectly. Even a suit off the rack that is altered will not look as good as a custom made suit.

Go back home with extra clothing in your luggage and you will probably not even pay any sales taxes or duty on the articles you purchased.
