I Want To Travel To Thailand?

My husband and I want to vacation in Thailand. We will be going for about a week. We can afford to fly to Bangkok, but not Phuket.

The real question is, is there a good town to stay in that is close enough to Bangkok that you can get to and from it easily, that has fun things to do, but far enough away so you don't feel like you are in a huge city?

We are interested in sight seeing, shopping and eating out. We have no interest in sitting on the beach or going to bars.
